Games Indigo | The 2021 Champions League final was due to take place on Saturday 29 May at Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium, the same place as Liverpool's 2005 triumph, which was described as the "miracle of Istanbul" after recovering from a 3-0 half-time deficit to beat AC Milan in the penalty shootout.

Given that it is an English final and in the midst of the Covid pandemic, there had been talking that the final could be moved to England, with Uefa wanting to move the match to Wembley. However, it is understood that the government was unwilling to grant the hundreds of quarantine exemptions for overseas staff who would have been required.

Instead, UEFA has confirmed that Porto’s Estadio do Dragao will replace Istanbul with as many as 12,000 fans in attendance.


The Champions League final will close out the 2020-21 season before the focus switches to this summer’s European Championship.


At the semi-final stage, Manchester City beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 on aggregate to reach the final, where they will meet Chelsea, who overcame Real Madrid 3-1.


Chelsea beat Porto in the quarter-finals to reach the last four, while Real Madrid knocked Liverpool out of the competition.


Is the Champions League final free to watch in the UK?

BT Sport has shown the final for free in the UK as they have won the rights to broadcast the Champions League from the 2015-16 season.


This year's Champions League final is likely to be shown on BT Sport 2, while it will be available for free on the BT Sport app, on BTSport.com, and on BT Sport's YouTube channel.

The city is yet to win a Champions League but will head into the final as favorites.


Chelsea won their first and to date only European Cup nine years ago when beating Bayern Munich in 2012 final.


Can fans get tickets?

The move to Portugal means thousands of fans will be able to attend the final of a tournament that has been almost exclusively played behind closed doors up until now.

The country is on the UK’s “green list”, allowing travelers to return after visiting without quarantine, assuming they test negative for Covid-19 on their return.
