Ferencvaros Stun AC Milan 2-0 at San Siro as Lenny Joseph's Brace Deepens Rossoneri Woes
San Siro fell silent on Thursday night, 5 November 2026, as Ferencvaros produced one of the biggest away results of the UEFA Europa League league phase so far. The Hungarian champions beat AC Milan 2-0 on Matchday 4, with Lenny Joseph scoring in the 52nd and 66th minutes, and the defeat left Milan with only three points from four matches, outside the top 24. For a club that had arrived at the game hoping to rebuild momentum after a derby win, the evening instead became a fresh reminder of how fragile its European campaign has become.
The result was not a smash-and-grab. Ferencvaros had already won their first three group games, against Celtic, Viktoria Plzen and Torreense, and they played in Milan with the calm of a team that believed it belonged at this level. Milan, by contrast, looked short of ideas for long spells, even though they had 70 percent of the ball and 15 shots. Possession did not turn into control, and the visitors were far more direct and dangerous whenever they broke forward. Joseph, in particular, kept finding space between the lines, and his link with Kristoffer Zachariassen proved decisive.

Milan had reason to feel hopeful before kick-off, which started at 00:45 WIB on Friday in Indonesia, or 17:45 GMT on Thursday. Only a few days earlier they had beaten their city rivals 3-1 in the Derby della Madonnina, a result that restored confidence after a difficult run. Coach Ruben Amorim, however, had to cope with several absences. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was suspended after the 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth, so third-choice Lorenzo Torriani stepped in, with Pietro Terracciano, Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Samuel Chukwueze, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and others also unavailable. That forced a reshaped side, and the lack of rhythm showed from the start.
Ferencvaros made the brighter opening. Zachariassen tested Torriani with an angled drive, and the young goalkeeper was called into action again before the break when Joseph drove from about ten yards. Milan's first real chance did not arrive until the 39th minute, when Alphadjo Cisse could not keep a half-volley down. The home crowd grew restless, and Amorim reacted at half-time with a triple change, introducing Christian Pulisic, Mario Gila and Diego Moreira. Luka Modric would follow later, coming on in the 63rd minute, but the changes could not change the pattern of the match.

For a short period after the restart, Milan did look brighter. Omari Hutchinson hit the side-netting from a tight angle, and Moreira caused problems with his direct running. Yet the breakthrough went the other way. In the 52nd minute, Torriani took a heavy touch, Zachariassen pressed him, and Joseph finished the move to put Ferencvaros ahead. It was a goal born from pressure rather than luck: the visitors had hunted the ball all evening, and they were rewarded when Milan tried to play out under stress.
The second goal, in the 66th minute, exposed Milan's defensive shape even more clearly. As the home side poured forward in search of an equaliser, they left large gaps behind them. Ferencvaros broke quickly, Zachariassen again supplied the pass, and Joseph finished for his second of the night. Both goals carried the same assist, and both told the same story: a well-organised visiting team punishing a side that was chasing the game without a plan to protect itself. Francesco Camarda came on and turned a Moreira cross wide of the near post, while Hutchinson's angled drive shaved the far post, but the chances felt like consolation rather than a comeback.
There was still one more twist. In the 77th minute, Ferencvaros substitute Bamidele Yusuf was sent off for raising an elbow into Mario Gila's face, an incident spotted by VAR. Playing against ten men for the final stretch should have given Milan a way back, but they could not find it. Denes Dibusz stuck out a boot to parry a low Hutchinson drive, and even down to ten, Ferencvaros nearly added a third in stoppage time, when Madarasz could not make the most of a late opening. The final whistle brought whistles from the home stands, and the scoreline, 0-2, felt fair.
For Milan, the table now makes uncomfortable reading. Three points from four games, and a place outside the top 24, means there is very little room left for error. In this format, the teams that finish outside the top 24 are out, and Milan are currently in that group. They will need wins, and probably more than one, from their remaining fixtures, and they will need to rediscover the defensive discipline that was missing here. Torriani made some good saves, including a strong one-handed stop at the near post from Zachariassen, but a goalkeeper should not be the busiest player in a home game that his team is expected to win.
Ferencvaros, meanwhile, can enjoy a remarkable position. Four wins from four, top of their group, and a famous victory at San Siro to add to their earlier results. Joseph will take the headlines for his brace, but Zachariassen's two assists, and the discipline of the whole side, were just as important. They defended in numbers, broke with purpose, and stayed calm even after the red card. It was the performance of a team that knew exactly what it wanted from the night.
Amorim now faces difficult questions. The derby win showed what this Milan side can do when it is confident and settled, but the Europa League campaign has shown the other side: a team that can lose its shape, lose its composure, and lose to opponents it would once have expected to beat at home. The introductions of Modric and Pulisic were meant to add experience and quality, yet neither could rescue a game that had already slipped away. That, more than any single mistake, is the worry for Milan's supporters.
For now, the story of the night belongs to Ferencvaros and to Lenny Joseph. Two goals, two assists from the same team-mate, and a 2-0 win at one of Europe's most famous stadiums will stay with them for a long time. For Milan, the task is simpler to state than to achieve: win the games that remain, and hope that this defeat, the third in four European matches, does not become the moment their season in Europe ended early.
