Newcastle United earned a valuable 2-0 victory away at Crystal Palace, with two quick second-half goals turning a tight contest into a comfortable win at Selhurst Park. The result gave the visitors three much-needed points and kept them firmly in touch with the leading pack in the Premier League.
Palace started the brighter of the two sides and threatened early from a goalmouth scramble, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Axel Disasi both going close. Newcastle stood firm, however, and the home side were unable to turn that early pressure into a goal. That resilience proved important, because the match changed completely after half-time.
Newcastle came out strongly in the second half and broke the deadlock in the 47th minute. Jacob Murphy produced an excellent cross from the right, sending a teasing ball into the area that William Osula turned home. It was a reward for the visitors' renewed energy and for Murphy's willingness to attack the wide areas.
The visitors thought they had doubled their lead when Joe Willock curled a fine effort into the bottom corner, but VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out. That moment could easily have shifted the momentum back towards Palace, yet Newcastle stayed composed and continued to look for a second goal rather than sitting back.
Barnes Seals the Win
The second goal arrived in the 58th minute and effectively settled the match. Amar Dedic sent in a low cutback from the right wing to the penalty spot, where Harvey Barnes was on hand to finish. In the space of 11 minutes, Newcastle had scored twice and taken full control of the game.
For Palace, the defeat was another frustrating afternoon at home. They had moments in the first half and will feel that the match was there to be won, but they could not find a way back once Newcastle's two second-half strikes arrived. The loss also increased the pressure on the hosts, who need to turn promising spells into points.
For Newcastle, the win was about efficiency as much as flair. They survived the early scare, raised their tempo after the break and took their chances when they arrived. A clean sheet away from home, plus goals from two different scorers, will give the squad confidence for the weeks ahead.
The result also matters for the wider title race. As of 28 October 2026, Manchester City and Arsenal both sit on 21 points at the top of the Premier League, setting the pace for the rest of the division. Behind them, Brighton are on 16 points, Liverpool on 15 and Chelsea on 13, which shows how tight the race for the leading places remains.
What It Means for the Table
Newcastle's win leaves them in eighth place with 11 points, within reach of the teams above them if they can build a run of results. That position may not sound dramatic, but in such a congested table, a single weekend can move several clubs up or down. Consistency, rather than one good result, will now be the test for the visitors.
Attention now turns to the next round of fixtures, including Manchester City against Brighton on 31 October. That match will be a key test for both sides: City will want to protect their place at the top, while Brighton can close the gap if they take points from the champions. For Newcastle, the challenge is simpler — repeat the second-half quality shown at Selhurst Park, and the table will take care of itself.
